The eye to eye approach is very effective, It makes me feel really in touch with the young bird
Very interesting subject we must approach very carefully.
Very clean composition I like, an eye to eye contact that you managed quite well; the young great horned doesn't look afraid.
Use of camera,
All the equipment was used properly.Having the opportunity of using the tripod the use of the flash wasn't mandatory, but it added a pleasant light into tha eyes of the bird.

Douglas, you mentioned you have troubles in using the flash if I understand correctl. It is a controversial matter if using the flash you can cause some kind of troubles to the bird like this because the flash is a very very short source of ligh; having the opportunity of using the tripod it wasn't mandatory to use the flash.
Talking about the color and lighting I checked the histogram of the picture and I saw that it is a little bit shifted on the left side because of the black spot on the bottom right side of the picture. Nothing serious, but take it into account if you do some postproduction
In order to try for a better composition, always remember to go around to your subject and look carefully if there is a better composition.
